Nate pulled back from their kiss and brushed his fingers over Blair’s hair. “So am I allowed to do this now?” he asked with a gentle smile on his face. Blair just looked up at him with her enormous eyes and Nate just had to lean back in.
For them, this wasn’t all about fireworks and sparks and drama. This was about what felt right. This was about feeling safe. This was about their history. They had been together for years before all of the drama from two years before. They knew each other inside and out, knew each other’s flaws and strengths. They had seen each other at their best and at their worst, and they still loved each other.
Maybe that had needed that breakup. Maybe they had needed to see the dark side of human nature before they could be happy together. Blair needed to fall apart over Chuck and learn that she couldn’t control every aspect of her life. She needed to be rejected by Yale, needed to make up with her best friend, needed to learn. Nate needed to accept his family and his place in the world, needed to experience something outside his tight circle of friends in the UES, needed to see.
They had stumbled, fallen and had their hearts broken. But they had also gotten up, brushed off their clothes and continued with their heads held high. Everybody’s lives had been rearranged since Serena stepped off that train and back into their lives. At that time, Nate and Blair had been teetering at the edge, they hadn’t quite fit properly, they weren’t quite right.
Their time apart had allowed them to grow, allowed them to fit together again. When they were with each other, it felt good. It didn’t hurt like it did a lot of the time with Chuck and Vanessa and Serena. Their hearts felt safe.
This time Blair pulled back and tipped her head upwards, letting the snow drift onto her face and settle on her eyelashes. Nate stared and felt the familiar clench in his heart that he had always felt when he looked at her. That had never gone away. Blair tilted her head back down and opened her eyes, looking completely content with the world. She had Nate back. She hadn’t even known that she really wanted him back; it had started as a simple ploy of revenge, but she had realized how good they were together. It wasn’t all about passion and sex, they could sit and talk for hours about anything and everything.
Brown eyes stared into blue and their hands drifted towards each other, fingers entwining. “Have dinner with me.”
Blair smiled, “Of course, Nate.” They turned and started walking out of the park but stopped in front of the fountain.
Nate turned and stepped in front of Blair. He kissed her softly and leaned their foreheads together. Their hands were clasped at their sides.
“I love you, Blair. I always have.” His reverent tone made Blair’s heart melt just a little more. She fell just a little harder.
“I love you too, Nate. I never stopped.” His hand came up to stroke her cheek. Her hand joined his and they stood there silently, just taking in the moment.
It felt like home.
